Tribometry is the scientific study of friction, wear, and lubrication between surfaces in relative motion. It plays a crucial role in various fields such as engineering, materials science, and biomechanics. Why this matters? Employers are required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to maintain clean and dry floors according to 29 CFR 1910.22(a). However, the regulation does not explicitly state a minimum coefficient of friction (COF) requirement. In a 2003 interpretation letter, OSHA refers to a regulatory preamble that suggests a COF of 0.5. Nonetheless, this document does not provide any specific standard or testing procedure. On the other hand, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) recommends a COF of 0.6 for level surfaces, but similar to OSHA, it does not specify a particular testing method or standard.
